The Class E Knowledge Exam is the written test every new Florida driver passes to get a learner's permit. It is built from the official Florida Driver License Handbook, and it rewards people who know exact numbers rather than people who "drive fine already". Here is the format, the four topic areas, how scoring works and what to expect on the day.

The four topic areas
FLHSMV does not publish an exact split, but questions fall into four groups. Our topic tests match them one to one.
1. Road signs, signals and pavement markings
Expect to identify a sign by shape and color alone, know what each traffic-light state means (including a flashing yellow and a flashing red), and read pavement markings such as a solid versus broken yellow line. Questions here are the easiest points on the test if you have studied and the easiest to lose if you have not. 2. Traffic laws and right of way
Speed limits when none is posted (30 mph in business and residential districts, 55 mph on other roads unless marked), who yields at a four-way stop, when you may turn right on red, how far from a fire hydrant or crosswalk you may park, the Move Over law for stopped emergency vehicles, and school-bus stopping rules. 3. Safe driving practices
Following distance (the handbook teaches a minimum of two seconds, more in bad weather), how to handle a skid or a tire blowout, hydroplaning in Florida rain, sharing the road with motorcycles, bicycles and trucks, and what to do at a railroad crossing. Drill it with the safe driving test.
4. Alcohol, drugs and Florida-specific laws
The legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08 for drivers 21 and older, the 0.02 limit for drivers under 21, the implied consent law and what happens if you refuse a breath test, how alcohol affects judgment and reaction time, and penalties for a first DUI. Our alcohol and drugs test covers all of it.
How the questions are worded
Three patterns cause most wrong answers:
- Exact numbers. "How many feet before a turn must you signal?" (100 feet in a city). "Within how many feet of a crosswalk may you not park?" (20 feet). If you cannot state the number, you cannot guess it.
- Negative phrasing. "Which of the following is NOT true?" Read the whole question twice before looking at the options.
- Best answer, not a true answer. Two options may be partly correct. The handbook's wording is the one they want.
Scoring and what happens on the day
In the office the exam is taken on a computer or tablet and you get your result immediately. Forty correct is a pass and you move straight on to the photo and payment. Under forty, you can retake. Florida does not publish a statewide waiting period, and many offices let you return the next business day; each retake costs $10. See our guide on what to do if you fail.
If you tested online through a third-party provider, keep one rule in mind: FLHSMV can randomly select you for a free mandatory retest at the office, without notice, when you come in for the license. What is not on the exam
Nothing about operating the car. Parking, three-point turns and lane changes belong to the driving skills test, which you take a year later for the full license. Insurance, registration and title questions are rare. Focus on the four areas above.
How to prepare in one week
- Read the handbook chapters on signs, rules of the road, safe driving and alcohol. Two evenings.
- Take one full 50-question practice exam cold to find your weak area.
- Drill that area with the topic test until you score 90%.
- Take two more full practice exams. When you pass both at 90% or above, book the appointment.
