Florida permit requirements and documents
Exactly what you need to qualify and what to bring to the office.
Who can apply
- You must be at least 15 years old for a learner's permit.
- You must complete the required course first (DETS if under 18, TLSAE if 18 or older).
- You must pass the Class E Knowledge Exam (50 questions, 80% to pass).
- You must pass a vision and hearing screening.
Documents to bring
Bring original or certified documents. Photocopies are not accepted. A typical first-time applicant brings:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Proof of identity | Certified U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport |
| Proof of Social Security number | Social Security card, W-2, or paystub showing full SSN |
| Proof of residential address (two documents) | Utility bill, bank statement, lease, or official mail showing your Florida address |
| Parental consent (under 18) | Form HSMV 71018, signed before an examiner or notarized |
Names must match across your documents. If your name has changed (for example, by marriage), bring certified proof of each change, such as a marriage certificate.
Vision and hearing
You must pass a vision test of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses. If you wear glasses or contacts to pass, your license will note that you must wear them when driving. A basic hearing check is also done.
Fees
You pay a permit fee at the office, plus a small service fee if you use a county Tax Collector. Fees change over time, so check your local office for the current amount.
Learner's permit driving rules
- A licensed driver 21 or older must ride in the front passenger seat.
- For the first 3 months, you may drive only during daylight hours.
- After 3 months, you may drive until 10:00 p.m.
- You must hold the permit for 12 months (or until age 18) before the road test.
