The TLSAE and DETS course explained
The course every first-time Florida driver must finish before the permit.
Before you can get a learner's permit in Florida, the law requires first-time drivers to complete a state-approved education course. Which course depends on your age.
Which course do I need?
| Your age | Required course | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Under 18 | DETS (Driver Education and Traffic Safety) | 6 hours |
| 18 and older | TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) | 4 hours |
What is the TLSAE course?
TLSAE stands for Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education. It is also called the Drug and Alcohol course, DATE, or the First Time Driver course. It teaches how alcohol and drugs affect driving, Florida traffic laws, and safe-driving attitudes. It is a one-time requirement for new drivers 18 and older.
What is the DETS course?
DETS stands for Driver Education and Traffic Safety. It is the 6-hour course now required for teens under 18. It covers the same safety and substance-abuse topics in more depth, reflecting the higher crash risk for young drivers.
How do I take it?
- Both courses are offered online by state-approved providers and can usually be done at your own pace.
- When you finish, the provider reports your completion to the FLHSMV electronically. You do not mail a paper certificate.
- Costs are modest, often around $20 to $35, depending on the provider.
Course versus exam: what is the difference?
The course and the Class E Knowledge Exam are two separate things:
- The course (DETS or TLSAE) is the education requirement you complete first.
- The Class E Knowledge Exam is the 50-question test you must pass to get the permit.
This site helps you with the second part. See what is on the exam and start practicing.
