1. Read the handbook chapters that matter
The exam is written from the Florida Driver License Handbook. Four chapters produce nearly every question: traffic signs and signals, rules of the road (right of way, speed, turning, passing, parking), safe driving, and alcohol and drugs. Two evenings of reading is enough. Skip the sections on vehicle registration and license plates; they are rarely tested.
2. Memorize the numbers list
Most wrong answers are numbers. Write these on a card and read it daily until you can reproduce it from memory.

3. Learn signs by shape and color, not by picture
The exam describes a sign and asks what it is. Octagon is stop, pennant is no passing, pentagon is school, circle is railroad, diamond is warning; red prohibits, yellow warns, orange is construction, green guides, blue is services, brown is recreation. 4. Take a full practice exam before you feel ready
Your first 50-question practice exam is diagnostic. Take it cold after the reading and note which topic produced the most misses. That topic gets tomorrow's study session; the others are fine.
5. Drill weak topics with topic tests
Do the matching topic test until you hit 90%: road signs, road rules, safe driving, alcohol and drugs. Read the explanation on every miss; the explanation is the handbook rule you did not know.
6. Read every question twice, and every option once
"Which of the following is NOT true" and "the safest action is" account for a surprising share of errors. Do not answer until you have read the last option. If two seem right, choose the one that matches handbook wording rather than common practice.
7. Practice in English
FLHSMV states the Class E knowledge exam is available in English only. If you have been studying in Spanish, switch your last three practice exams to English so the phrasing is familiar on test day.
8. Aim for 90% three times in a row
The pass mark is 80%. Do not book the appointment until you score 90% or better on three consecutive full practice exams. The cushion absorbs nerves and unusual wording.
9. Handle the day properly
- Sleep. Cramming past midnight costs more points than it gains.
- Bring the full document checklist; a missing paper means no exam that day.
- Arrive early enough not to be rushed. There is no clock in the office, so slow down on the test.
- Skip a hard question mentally, answer the rest, then return. Momentum matters.
10. Know the plan if you fail
